Jehovah Nissi: The LORD My Banner (Exodus 17)

When Moses' hands were lifted, Israel prevailed. When his hands dropped, Amalek prevailed. Aaron and Hur held up his hands until sundown — and Israel won. This lesson teaches children that we fight under God's banner, and that we need each other to hold on.

Frequently asked

What translation is the lesson?+

King James Version, exclusively. Every verse quoted is KJV. No paraphrase.

What does Jehovah Nissi mean?+

"Jehovah Nissi" means "The LORD my banner" — from Exodus 17:15. A banner was a rallying point in battle. God was Israel's banner: the reason they could stand and fight. This lesson teaches children that God is our banner — we fight under His name and His strength.

How do you handle the battle content for young children?+

The lesson focuses on Moses on the mountain, not the fighting. There is no blood, no violence — the story centers on lifted hands, holding each other up, and God giving the victory. Ages 5–12 handle this well.
